Stallions win first ever state title
American Heritage wins the Class 1A state championship at the buzzer
Published December 13th, 2007
American Heritage-Delray won its first ever state football championship
in dramatic fashion Friday, as senior kicker Jordan Spennato, who
hadn’t kicked a single field goal all year, drilled a 40-yarder
with no time remaining to lift the Stallions to a 3-128 win over North
Florida Christian at the Citrus Bowl.
Spennato had missed just three extra points all year, and hadn’t
attempted a field goal because the Stallions usually like to go for
it and score touchdowns rather than settle for three-pointers.
Justin Feagin dominated the game for Heritage, rushing for 206 yards
and scoring three touchdowns, and he completed 7-of-13 passes for
70 yards and contributed eight tackles while playing safety.
Feagin tied the score at 21-all with an 80-yard TD run late in the
third quarter.
He then put the Stallions ahead 28-21 with a 39-yard run midway
through the fourth quarter.
Eagles quarterback Cole Trickett threw his third TD pass of the
game, a 72-yarder to receiver Melvin Ray, to tie the score again with
2:26 left.
Trickett, the son of Florida State Seminoles offensive line coach
Rick Trickett, passed for 307 yards. Ray had five catches for 146
yards and all three TDs, and Darius McQueen caught 10 passes for 117
yards.
It was the second state title game appearance for Heritage, which
made it in 2003 but fell. The title was Stallions coach Willie Bueno’s
third. He won as a player for Glades Day in 1986, then won a state
title as Glades Central coach in 2000.
The Stallions finished 13-1.
