Sosa headed to UCF

After months of indecision, Grandview Prep senior Isaac Sosa decided to sign with UCF to continue his basketball career.

Sosa, the 19th highest-rated high school player in the state, had been scouted by the University of Colorado, Hofstra, Old Dominion, and VCU, and he earlier turned down a scholarship to FIU.

He decided on UCF partly to stay at home, and also because he felt Orlando and the team offered him exactly what he needed.

“I’m really excited,” he said. “This was a real tough decision.”

Sosa averaged 19.5 points, 6.5 assists and 6.0 rebounds for the Pride last season, as Grandview reached the Class 1A state final.

Sosa likes UCF coach Kirk Speraw’s up-tempo style, and the team is in need of a combo guard with Sosa’s skills.

“UCF is just perfect for me,” he said.
But Sosa chose the school for more than just basketball.
“I learned that there’s more than basketball in college,” he said.

“Basketball is going to take up four or five hours of my day, so what am I going to do the rest of the day?”

Because Orlando is not too far north from his native Puerto Rico, and because of the large Puerto Rican population there and the weather, Sosa said the combination was a good fit.

The Knights finished fourth in Conference USA last year in a 12-team league, and Sosa said he’s been promised a chance to compete for a starting position.

“I have a really, really good chance,” he said. “I know I can do it and there’ s a good chance for me to do that.”

Busch signs with FSU

West Boca Raton lefthander Brian Busch, who originally had verbally committed to FAU, has signed with FSU, according to Bulls coach Brian Joros.

Busch, who was 8-2 with a 0.45 ERA this season, made the commitment after visiting with Seminoles coach Mike Martin Wednesday.

“Brian has always been such a dominant player,” Joros said. “It is a feather in our cap. We’ve been putting 75 percent of our players in college. This was a good fit for Brian.”
