Thursday didn’t start well for Olympic Heights alumnus and diver Jevon Tarantino, or his partner Chris Colwill at the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix in Fort Lauderdale.
Tarantino finished seventh in the 3-meter dive in the morning, but because teammate Colwill and
fellowAmericans Kristian Ipsen and Troy Dumais finished above him – and only two divers from each country can advance – Tarantino failed to qualify.
Then, in the first synchro dive of the night with Colwill, who placed 12th in the 3-meter semifinals, Tarantino felt his knee buckle and he hit the water before his teammate.
The pair received a 43.20 score – tied for last in the first round – but responded with five good dives to claim the silver medal in the synchro competition.
China’s Luo Yutong and Xinhua Zhang won with a 441.39 total, while Colwill and Tarantino finished with a 416.37.
“We had great performances, but not the way we can dive, and we were a little upset about that,” Tarantino said. “But we went through the day and turned it around and said this is a different event, we’ve got to move on.”
Colwill and Tarantino saved their best dive for last, as they completed a reverse 3 1/2 somersault that earned them their highest score of the event, an 87.15.
Now the pair turn to the Olympic trials, which start next month.
“I think our confidence level is really good,” Colwill said. “We just have a few things to work on, but I feel really good about our upcoming meet.”
