HERBERT OTTO LEIPOLD

DELRAY BEACH

Herbert Otto Leipold, born in 1916 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Otto and Ida Leipold. He died in his home at Harbour’s Edge in Delray Beach, Florida on Nov. 17, 2007. He is survived by his two children: son Jim (Sandy) Leipold and daughter Jan Leipold; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He graduated in Civil Engineering at Tri-State University. During WWII, he was in charge of an engineering department in Good Year Aircraft designing dirigibles. Herb then went into sales and in 1950 started the first of three companies which manufactured wiring harnesses and heater wire used in electric blankets, refrigerator butter compartments, pipe wraps and in-ground snow-melters.

Herb loved his Lord and his church, serving on the governing board and a variety of committees in Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in South Bend and later St. Paul Lutheran Church in Boca Raton, FL. After “fighting the good fight of faith”, Herb greeted death in the “sure and certain hope of the resurrection”. In 1961 Herb established the Leipold Foundation, which has supported medical, educational and cultural endeavors through the years. In 1988 he began the “Love Bear Ministry” which eases the trauma of children and families through gifting teddy bears and other stuffed animals, large and small, to local hospitals, police and fire departments, and churches. Herb loved his home at Harbour’s Edge and served on many of their key organizational committees. His foundation donated the shuffleboard courts and got residents and staff participating. Herb was the owner of a 1929 Model A Phaeton and member of the Model A Club of St. Lauderdale. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church, in Boca Raton on Wednesday November 21, 2007. Reception at the church to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leipold Foundation, 1537 E. Hillsboro Blvd. #742, Deerfield Beach, FL 33441. Babione Funeral Home East (561) 395 8787 entrusted with funeral arrangements.
