Boca Friends raise $24,000 for cancer research

Published February 24th, 2008

FROM STAFF REPORTS

More than $24,000 was raised for research projects at the University of Miami/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in Miami and Deerfield Beach at the annual luncheon and card party of the Boca Friends for Cancer Research.

Boca Friends is an open membership unit of the Papanicolaou Corps, a volunteer organization associated with the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami.

The Corps has been raising money for cancer research since 1952. It is a grassroots volunteer organization that has more than 18,000 members in Palm Beach, Broward and Dade Counties. Since May 2002, the Corps has donated more than $14 million for cancer research projects. These funds provide seed money for the university and enable doctors to apply for larger grants from the National Cancer Institute.

The Boca Friends Unit has more than 400 women and men participating in its various fundraising activities during the season. About 230 members and friends attended the luncheon and card party. Each year, vendors are invited to the event, selling purses, jewelry, clothing and other items.  Many raffle prizes donated by area businesses and individuals raised additional funds.

Luncheons, walkathons, golf and tennis tournaments are some of the other activities planned by the Boca Friends for Cancer Research Unit from October through April each year.  The next event is the annual Charity Walkathon, “Step Up For The Cure” at Broken Sound on March 9.  It is open to the public and the registration fee includes brunch, a T-Shirt and water.
