Dance to raise funds to buy food for Haiti

Published May 8th, 2008

FROM STAFF REPORTS

Toussaint L’Ouverture High School for Arts and Social Justice has announced that its spring dance Friday will raise funds to send food and supplies to Haiti.  It will be at the school at 2501 Seacrest Blvd., Delray Beach, from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.

The fundraising effort is a student-led initiative. TLHS students have taken the school’s mission “to be co-creators of a world we can believe in” and put it into action by organizing the event.

“Students came to me and proposed the idea of a dance to raise funds to be sent to our sister school in Liancourt, Haiti,” said teacher Jana Newton. “TLHS has a unique connection to Liancourt because many students have younger siblings, family and friends in this small town.”

“Knowing that every penny goes to where it is promised was a key issue for TLHS students,” she said.  “Their faith that everyone’s hard work will supersede bureaucratic red tape or mismanagement has been instrumental in firing the student’s enthusiasm for the dance fundraiser.”
