Boca probes death of local police officer

Published May 6th, 2008

FROM STAFF REPORTS

Boca Raton police are investigating the “suspicious death” of one of its own officers, a report said.

Public Information Officer Sandra Boonenberg said the department received a call at 5:37 a.m. Sunday from the officer’s roommate, who said he hadn’t heard from him and was worried.

Officers forced the door open and found the officer, Eduardo Martin Velasquez, dead inside. Boonenberg said there were no outward signs of trauma and the cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

She said Velasquez has been a Boca Raton Police Officer since February 2008. Officer Velasquez was under investigation for an incident that occurred May 1.  A female neighbor claimed she had been sexually battered by Velazquez.  Boonenberg said Velazquz said the sexual incident was consensual.

The officer had been placed on administrative leave, Boonenberg said, while detectives conducted a thorough investigation for subsequent review by the State Attorney’s Office.
