FROM STAFF REPORTS
The American Orchid Society welcomes the community to recognize its founders and celebrate its 87th anniversary Monday. The event is free and open to the public.
It will begin at 10 a.m. at the AOS headquarters at 16700 AOS Lane, Delray Beach.
Visitors are invited to celebrate with a cake, decorated in delicate sugar orchids, beverages, garden tours throughout the day and a special greeting and speech by AOS President Carlos Fighetti. Cake cutting commences at 10:45 a.m. with an orchid plant raffle to follow.
Adding to the festivities at 11 a.m. will be a book signing by orchid grower Robert Fuchs of R.F. Orchids, who will speak about the book, “Robert’s Road, Chronicle of an Orchid Tradition,” written by Flora Murphy.
The celebration comes during April, which is National Orchid Month, designated as such by the AOS on its 80th birthday in 2001. The naming of the month is designed to raise awareness nationally of orchids and the burgeoning hobby.
With nearly 18,000 members around the world, the AOS is recognized as a proponent of orchid education, research, and conservation. It is the largest special-interest horticultural organization in the world.
The AOS Visitors Center and Botanical Garden is located adjacent to The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. The AOS center has also become a popular site for corporate meetings and special events, such as weddings and private parties.
The AOS facility and gardens are open daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 pm. For information, call 561-404-2000 or visit www.aos.org
