FROM STAFF REPORTS
John M. Maloney, Jr., president and CEO of Bluegreen Corporation, headquartered in Boca Raton, will serve for a fourth consecutive year as corporate chairman for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s South County Walk to Cure Diabetes.
Under his leadership, Bluegreen Corporation will serve as the lead corporate team for the two-mile walkathon slated for Saturday, March 29. This year’s theme is “Banking on a Cure.”
As Chairman, Maloney will focus on recruiting other business executives and their companies to join forces with Bluegreen Corporation and JDRF to raise the needed dollars to fund some of the most advanced diabetes research in the world.
“Last year, Bluegreen employees, associates, friends and families pulled together to form a walk team that was 200 people strong,” said Maloney. “Through various measures, together we raised about $125,000 to benefit diabetes research.”
Walk to Cure Diabetes kicked off with at a luncheon attended by close to 180 guests who represented corporate, school and family teams. Delivering the personal message was JDRF’s Teen Ambassador, Tyler Notaras, who spoke about how diabetes has affected his life, but also that through ongoing research and development, the management of his diabetes has become easier, lending him the freedom travel, serve as the captain of his school basketball team and just be a regular freshman in high school.
The Walk to Cure Diabetes will be held at a new location this year – Mizner Park Amphitheatre in Boca Raton. Esther Swann, JDRF’s special event coordinator, said, “We are excited about this new venue and the opportunity it lends to let more of the community know about JDRF and our mission to find a cure for diabetes. We’ve set an aggressive goal of $415,000. With the support of our generous and caring community, I am confident that we will meet and perhaps even exceed this goal.”
