FROM STAFF REPORTS
New Year’s Eve is still a long way off.
But the city of Delray Beach has already issued a call to artists for the design of the First Night® 2009 button and poster.
The poster will be used to promote First Night® 2009. The button will serve as admittance to all events on the evening of New Year’s Eve 2009.
All applications must be postmarked by 5 p.m. on Friday, July 11. The winning artist will receive a one-time payment of $500 for the selected design.
First Night® is a community celebration of the New Year through the arts. It is an alcohol-free, public festival that marks the passage from the old year to the new with art, ritual and festivity.
All First Night® celebrations are licensed by First Night International. First Night® celebrations offer a variety of artists with a broad range of appeal.
Any professional or amateur artist may submit a design for the First Night® button and poster. Artists may submit new designs, which can include either an original two-dimensional artwork or a graphic design. The City of Delray Beach will only select from original works of art.
All submitted artwork must be capable of being downsized to approximately 2½ inches by 3 inches or three inches in diameter as the shape of the button could be square, rectangular or circular.
The poster will be about 11 inches by 17 inches and should be designed so that additional text or information will not interfere with the artwork.
Artist selection will take place in July. The City of Delray Beach First Night® 2009 Committee will serve as the selection committee.
Selection criteria will include quality of artwork, experience and qualifications of artist, appropriateness of the artwork to the size and dimensions of the button, and the appropriateness of the artwork to the goals of First Night® 2009.
